How to Calculate Fence Materials
Fence material math is arithmetic, not algebra — but it has sharp edges, and every edge is a place where an estimate leaks. The four formulas that do 90% of the work
Posts. posts = ceil(run ÷ spacing) + 1
The +1 is the starting post. A 100 ft run at 8 ft spacing: 100 ÷ 8 = 12.5 → round up to 13 bays → 14 posts.
Bays (sections). bays = ceil(run ÷ spacing)
Bays drive rails, panels, and (for vinyl) line posts.
Rails. rails = bays × 2 for fences under 6 ft, bays × 3 for 6 ft and up. Privacy styles always × 3.
Pickets. pickets = ceil(run in inches ÷ (board width + gap)) + 1
A 5½ in board with a ½ in gap covers 6 in. Overlap styles (board-on-board) cover only 4½ in — a third more boards.

Chain link hides its parts: terminals, bars, bands, and ties never appear in the customer's imagination but decide whether install day finishes. The chain link fence calculator counts them all.
When to stop calculating by hand
The formulas above assume straight runs. Add a slope, a style change mid-run, or a double gate, and every count shifts — slope adds real feet to the fabric, and a gate breaks the bay math. That's the point where a drawing-driven takeoff pays for itself: the layout is the formula.

Do I round up or down when calculating fence materials?
Always round up. A 100 ft run of 8 ft panels needs 13 panels — the 13th panel gets cut. Rounding down produces an estimate that cannot be built, and the difference comes out of your margin on site.
How much extra material should I add for waste?
Chain link fabric: 5%. Wood pickets: 10%. Vinyl panels: one spare panel per job over 100 ft. Concrete: no waste — order exact bags. Rails: 1 spare per 200 ft for cuts.
Should corners be counted as extra posts?
For wood, a corner replaces a line post — the +1 math already covers the geometry if you count corners as end points of each run. For vinyl and chain link, corner posts are a different part number and must be counted separately.
